In the late 1800s, Greenwood had already developed an active economy of merchants. The railroad was built through the area in 1852, bringing with it the entrepreneurs who wished to capitalize on the new traffic through town. Over the next several decades, the region’s infrastructure expanded to include not only trades, but services such as banking and insurance as well. Textiles grew rapidly and later became the primary economic force of the region.

Today, Greenwood’s economy is more diversified. The area is known for excellent healthcare services and clinical research organizations. Several manufacturing facilities in various industries are also located within the county. Transportation, trade and tourism are also strong sectors.

The population of Greenwood County is approximately 68,000. About one-third of the total county population is in the city of Greenwood at the center of the county. Another 6,000 people live in the towns of Hodges, Ninety Six, Troy and Ware Shoals combined, with Ninety Six and Ware Shoals having the largest concentration of people.

Ninety Six, settled in the 1750s, is the oldest community in the county. It is also home to the Ninety Six National Historic Site and Star Fort. Star Fort, a British post, was attacked by General Nathaniel Greene and his troops. The remains of the fort are still on site, and residents may enjoy walking paths and hiking trails as well.

The best known recreational facilities in Greenwood County are Lake Greenwood State Park and Sumter National Forest. Lake Greenwood boasts more than 11,400 acres of water and 200 miles of shoreline, all surrounded by pine forests. The site is used for camping, picnicking, boating, fishing and swimming. At Sumter National Forest, visitors explore densely wooded areas and scenic rivers. The Tyger River is perfect for a relaxing fishing trip, while the more exciting Chattooga is known for its whitewaters.
